Letter from Our Founder

As long as I can remember, I have always been overly involved with extracurricular activities and enjoyed being in leadership roles. In high school, I was salutatorian of my class, drum major of the band, a member of the math team, drama actress and set builder, cheerleader... In college, I continued marching in the band, was a resident assistant in my dormitory, joined my professional fraternity - You get the picture.

If I had to choose the single most influential experience in my life, it would have to be the year I spent with Up With People Cast B 1989... traveling, performing, living with host families, community involvement, career development, outlandish marketing experiences.

The basic premise behind Up With People was "peace through understanding" and it was hoped that our 136 students and staff representing 19 different countries would take all of their experiences home and build on them to become leaders in their communities. I believe that's when my passion for nonprofit organizations and volunteerism really took hold.

I moved to Fort Myers in July of 1993. By 1995, I still knew only my co-workers and was actively seeking both social and leadership opportunities. Serendipitously, I met a woman who introduced me to the Professionals Organized for Leadership and Opportunity (P.O.L.O. Club) of Lee County. I think my fellow P.O.L.O. members would say I was like a kid in a candy store - I have been involved in some way with just about every event P.O.L.O. has had in the past 10 years. I am probably best known in town for my past efforts with Jazz on the Green, Relay For Life and the Woofie Walk. I highly recommend volunteerism to everyone - not only do I feel satisfaction in having helped others, I have also met some of my dearest friends through P.O.L.O. and other organizations, not to mention other business leaders. I hope to continue to help others in our community of Fort Myers and its surrounding areas, which have now become my home.

My goals for this web project are many: to provide a website presence for its members, to creatively market their events, to plan some of my own multi-charity events and to help raise awareness for the work nonprofits and charitable organizations do in our community.
