2003 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Man & Woman of the Year Campaign

What do JEFF GORDON & Cecilia Kemmer have in common?

We have both accepted the challenge of supporting the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families! You can find out more about Jeff’s commitment to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by visiting www.jeffgordonfoundation.org - but PLEASE read on to learn more about mine!

First of all, I would like to say how truly blessed I am that none of my friends and/or family members have had to battle any form of these blood-related cancers. Having grown up in a physician’s home and being a nuclear pharmacist, I can, however, appreciate their incidence, research towards their cure, treatment and outcomes.

An estimated 108,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma this year. That’s one every 5 minutes! Approximately 632,000 Americans are presently living with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. Leukemia patients’ five-year survival rate has tripled in the last 39 years, bringing hope to many. With each fundraising event, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society can continue to provide research grants, patient services, community education and advocacy, locally as well as nationally.

I am pleased to announce that as a tribute to one of my personal heroes, I will be participating in the 2003 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, presented by Naples Illustrated. Candidates vying for the title are judged solely on their philanthropic efforts to successfully generate funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each dollar raised is counted as one vote. The two candidates, a man and a woman, with the most votes after an 8-week fundraising campaign will be named the 2003 Man & Woman of the Year.

All the monies raised this year will be in honor of our Girl of the Year, 9-year old Miss Brennah Boyle, and our Boy of the Year, 15-year-old Mr. Cameron Ballard. Both Brennah and Cameron are local leukemia survivors - Read their inspiring stories!

She suffered a relapse in June of 2000. The best hope for her survival was a bone marrow transplant in which her baby sister, Erin, was a perfect match. The transplant took place on September 5th, 2000. Today, Brennah is doing extremely well and is a happy, healthy young lady. Her favorith things are her puppy, Pebbles, and cats.
