The Charity:
IMPACT for Developmental Education
IMPACT began in the mid-1970’s as a project of
LARC (the Lee Association for Retarded Citizens). At
that time, there were no programs in Lee County that
offered education and therapeutic services to preschool
age children with disabilities. IMPACT was born out
of an effort to fill this void. In 1979, IMPACT incorporated
as an independent entity. Funding was secured from the
State Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services
(HRS), Lee County government through the Department
of Human Services, and the United Way of Lee County.
The new agency’s name – an acronym for Instructional
Methods for Parents And Children Together – illustrated
the founders’ philosophy that family participation
in the intervention process is essential. The agency’s
focus continues to be on both the special child and
his or her family. Since its foundation, IMPACT has
been able to help developmentally challenged children
fulfill their potential. To this end, a comprehensive
array of multi-disciplinary services is offered, including
child development programs, parent education and childcare
provider training.
Services and programs provided include speech and language
therapies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, family
training, counseling and home visits, social work services,
audiological (hearing) services, assistive technology
services, vision services and nursing services. School
age therapy, parent groups and lending library also
available.
IMPACT’s Developmental Children’s Center
is located at 3760 Schoolhouse Road W in Fort Myers,
Florida. Contact Exec Director Lindy Moorey at (239)
